Image Library Usage Agreement

University of Chicago faculty and staff are asked to please note the following conditions before using
an image available on this Web site. Please consult with University Publications & Creative Services regarding any
exceptions.
- Users. The images are intended only for the official use of University of Chicago faculty and
staff.
- Use. The images are intended for University of Chicago news, editorial, public relations, and
noncommercial uses only; please do not use an image for personal or other non-University of
Chicago purposes. Also, images should be used to benefit and promote the Universitynot
in a manner that harms the University or any individual depicted in a photograph.
- Permission & Clearances. The images may not be legally available for all uses. Please contact
Publications & Creative Services or the Office of the Legal Counsel with questions regarding a use.
Please secure any necessary written permissions or clearances in advance.
- Credits & Notices. Please note that photography credits and copyright or trademark notices
accompany each image and be sure to include them where appropriate.
- Photographic Images. Use of the photographs must be truthful to the scenes portrayed. In
general, manipulation that could be done in a traditional photographic darkroom is
permitted. If you have questions regarding a specific modification, contact Publications & Creative Services. Examples of limitations on manipulations are provided below.
Please feel free to modify in the following ways:
- Enlarging or reducing an image
- Straight-line cropping
- Lightening or darkening the overall image
- Lightening or darkening a specific area
(dodging and burning) to, for example, open
up shadows on a face
- Adjusting contrast or color to accommodate
technologies and mediums (e.g., printing
presses, paper surfaces, inks, and computer
screens) to maintain accurate reproduction of
the original colors and gray values
Please do not modify in the following ways:
- Transferring information from one
photograph to another photograph
- Transferring information from one part of a
photograph to another part of the
photograph
- Deleting elements from the photograph
- Adding elements to the photograph
